With support from the California Arts Council, SFGC will offer a series of culturally relevant hands-on in-school workshops exploring the intersection of western classical and Filipino music to students at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School and Lowell High School, who will learn about the creative process and go “behind the scenes” as SFGC develops Tomorrow’s Memories, a new choral-opera from American composer Matthew Welch based on the 1920s writings of Filipina immigrant Angeles Monrayo.
Each year, over 350 singers from 45 Bay Area cities ranging in age from 4 – 18 participate in the SFGC’s programs. The organization consists of a five-time GRAMMY Award-winning professional-level performance, recording, and touring ensemble and a six-level Chorus School training program. The San Francisco Girls Chorus School offers a program of unparalleled artistic and educational excellence, designed to take young girls from their first introduction to the art of choral singing through a full course of choral, vocal, and theoretical instruction. The Chorus School is made up of six levels: non-auditioned Prep Chorus, Training Chorus, and Levels I-IV, which choristers move through as they develop musically. Choristers spend one, two or three years in each level. The carefully structured training stages are designed specifically to increase technical skills, stamina and discipline in accordance with each chorister’s age and physical development.
