The San Francisco Boys Chorus (SFBC), founded in 1948, is one of the oldest nonprofit choral arts organizations in the country and the largest chorus for boys in the western United States. SFBC’s mission is “to provide music education, vocal training, and performance experiences at the highest artistic level to Bay Area boys from all cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.”
The Chorus was originally established nearly 75 years ago to train boy singers for the San Francisco Opera. For more than seven decades, SFBC choristers have continually served as soloists and chorus members for the Opera’s annual productions. Today, the SFBC is a Grammy Award-winning nonprofit arts provider, providing training and performance opportunities to 120 school-age children and youth from diverse backgrounds each year. Prior to the pandemic, SFBC choristers participate in more than 40 local and regional performances a year. During the pandemic, SFBC moved all instruction online and conducted digital performances only. As of November 2021, the Chorus resumed in-person instruction and live performances, following the latest COVID safety guidelines from public health authorities. The Concert Chorus has toured both nationally and internationally and has performed for U.S. presidents and foreign dignitaries.
