With support from the California Arts Council, the San Diego Guild of Puppetry will continue to expand and build on the successes of our first two pilot years of Arts Extension and YAA programming, in the underserved neighborhoods of Logan Heights and Barrio Logan. Program will again offer three summer puppet camp programs, coupled with a series of fall and spring workshops for barrio youth, and this coming year, bring additional after school enrichment programs to two local barrio schools.
The Guild is the primary resource for the puppetry arts in San Diego County. Its major focus is bringing curriculum and standards based programming to the schools, but it also provides puppet instruction, building, and training expertise to local colleges and theatres. It frequently collaborates with other arts and culture organizations, museums, libraries and community centers when their programs call for puppetry. It is committed to creating, presenting and mentoring a wide variety of performances, workshops, giant puppet parades, exhibits and hands-on arts experiences for all ages. Finding funding to bring free puppetry programming to underserved populations is, as always, a high priority. Its current teaching and performing artists have, collectively, well over 200 years professional experience in almost all phases of the art, and strongly believe in the power of puppet theatre to educate, inspire, and change the lives of those it touches in profound and positive ways.
