Project Description

Sacramento Children’s Museum’s (SCM) mission is to spark a passion for life-long learning! We accomplish our mission by providing a place where children are encouraged to think for themselves, expand their problem-solving abilities through creative exploration, and exercise both their bodies and their minds.

SCM was incorporated as a nonprofit in 2005. It is the vision of local educators who saw the need for inspiring learning through interactivity. SCM seeks to build an environment in which learning is exciting and enriching for children and their families and facilitated through exploration and hands-on activities. The desire in Sacramento to build a children’s museum was so great, that the organization quickly grew to include local business people, children’s advocates, physicians, librarians, and others. This group embarked on a journey to determine how to best meet the needs of the children in our community ages birth to 8, and the 7,000-square-foot Sacramento Children’s Museum is the result. The Museum opened to the public on August 25, 2011.

Over the past 10 years, SCM has emerged as a leading play-based learning advocate and community educational resource. Our hands-on exhibits and programs include art and creative pursuits, STEM-based activities, a pretend-play neighborhood, and a dedicated area for infant and toddler development. Not only do these interactive activities teach children foundational concepts in the arts, literacy, and STEM, they also foster children’s growth and development and help children understand the world around them. In recent years, we added programs to improve our museum’s accessibility and impact with a mobile museum for schools, increased programming for children with special needs, and discounted admission for low-income families. Our goal is to inspire all children through play-based learning!
