With support from the California Arts Council, Psyches of Color, Inc. will implement our Exert Your Voice Program, using Black and Latinx mental health professionals and youth leaders to conduct Exert Your Voice workshops for at-promise Black and Latinx youth, ages 13-25, in the community and the LA Probation Dept.
Mentoring POC – Culturally relevant mentoring 13-25. Mentoring has proven to be integral in the development of Black and Latinx adolescents and young adults in several areas such as mental health, academics, and self-empowerment. It may also promote racial identity that will positively be demonstrated in other areas of their lives.
Family Support – Family members need support too! We believe that, in order to holistically support youth, you have to support the family unit too! Groups are facilitated to support members of the family while simultaneously providing mental health education to family members.
Exert Your Voice – It’s so imperative to release intense emotions. Workshops conducted are centered on youth expressing themselves through journaling, music creation (e.g., hip-hop, rapping), storytelling, and many other forms of art.
Penpal POC – POCs connect with system-impacted POCs to instill hope and remind them that we are not free until we all are. The program uses creative writing to heal.
Black and Brown Minds M.A.T.T.E.R – A trauma-informed and culturally relevant positive youth development group (PYD), created by Psyches of Color, Inc. founder, Dr. Tierra T. Ellis, aims to decrease mental health stigma. Youth learn how to identify mental health symptoms and ways to cope. The PYD group further normalizes their experiences through group activities, while introducing them to advocacy and self-empowerment. The group is a mix of mental health, hip-hop culture, and Black and Latinx culture.
Nurturing POC – Nurturing POCs is centered on teen/young adult parents and their babies by 1) providing resources to support their mental wellness related to parenting and provide prevention-based psychoeducation and resources on mental health-related parenting topics from a culturally sensitive framework and 2) reduce feelings of isolation by providing opportunities for teen/young adult parents to connect with others through education/support groups.
