With support from the California Arts Council, Opera Cultura will develop long-term programs connected to our mainstage season, serving system-engaged youth at San Jose Juvenile Hall and Conxión to Community. Program development includes in-depth collaboration with partners, and two pilot workshops at each location.
Our programming in the past has included presenting Latinx opera, collaborating with Latinx based arts organizations, and providing training for young people in the performing arts through La Escuela Initiative. While San Jose remains our artistic home, we have also presented and co -presented in New York, Washington D.C, and México. Notable performances include Armienta’s opera Bless Me Ultima ( based on Rudolfo Anaya’s novel), and Rodriguez’s opera Frida ( based on the life of Frida Kahlo).
In June 2025, we’ll present Armienta’s opera Cuentos at the School of Arts and Culture – Mexican Heritage Theater in East San Jose; the work inspired by the true stories of farmworkers and immigrants. We’re collaborating with Latine LGBTQ+ theater company Alebrijes. Lastly, provide training to young people in the arts through our La Escuela Initiative. Many of the participants are young people of color in Santa Clara county.
