With support from the California Arts Council, Music is Extraordinary, Inc. dba Oakland Public Conservatory of Musical will facilitate Son Umbé, an Urban Youth Ensemble (Ages 10-17) That Centers The Afro-Mexican Experience Through An Exploration And Study Of Music. Students learn to play Son Jarocho Of Veracruz, Mexico With traditional string and percussion instruments, get an introduction to song and dance as well as explore social-historical experieces of Afro-Mexico.
OPC’s programs celebrate, preserve and extend the artistic heritage of the people of Oakland by providing access to shared and diverse musical genres grounded in the African American Experience, with an understanding of its role in the development of American music and culture. Its programs are designed to foster learning for people of all ages. OPC is dedicated to providing affordable world-class musical experiences. As a community music education institution, OPC serves as a gathering place for rehearsals, youth and adult classes, concerts, seminars, film screenings, and community celebrations. Music education programs include after-school Preparatory Studies in Music, Summer Music Academy, Afterschool Jazz, the pre-professional Frederick Douglas Youth Ensemble, Black Girls Play, and Community Music Workshops for adults.
