With the support from the California Arts Council, MENDOCINO PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY INC will use the grant funds to pay overhead expenses including rent, utilities, and payroll while we struggle with the safe re-opening of the theatre in accordance with state and local health department regulations.
MTC typically produces six main-stage plays and a series of readings each season. We also offer classes and workshops in acting, stage management, technical operation, and design for people of all ages and abilities, as well as a youth internship program for high school students interested in learning more about live theater.
During the pandemic, we developed a radio theatre production program which we have incorporated into our regular season this year. We believe this makes theatre more accessible to residents of Mendocino County who may be challenged by work commitments, age, physical limitations, transportation, etc.
Through the years, MTC has given local youth and adults the opportunity to work collaboratively in the creation of theatre — no matter what their age, ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, experience, or ability. Our productions, usually multi-generational, have been the training ground for many locals, giving them skills to succeed not just in theatre, but in other areas of life as well. We strive to make live theatre available to as many people as possible by providing affordable workshops (offering scholarships when needed); free tickets for high school students; complimentary tickets to volunteers; reduced price tickets to preview performances; and complimentary tickets to local nonprofits that focus on social welfare.
We have reinvigorated our youth program giving young people –especially teenagers–a chance to learn about theatre production, design, and performance in a safe, multicultural environment. We have also forged important community partnerships with organizations such as the Coast Latino Coalition, Parents & Friends, Inc., and Project Sanctuary. We are currently exploring a collaboration with SPACE.
For the past 48 years we have worked hard to maintain the professional quality of our work; to preserve the unique character of our company while adapting to meet the ever-changing needs of our community.
