Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, MARIN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY’s Student Matinee program will provide to four or more schools serving large numbers of low-income families: in-depth pre- and post- learning experiences with MSC Teaching Artists/Actors, and transportation and free tickets for these schools which cannot otherwise attend. We will also provide an Educator’s Event open to all area classroom teachers to deepen the experience for all students attending Student Matinees.

Organization Summary

ARTS:
– Professional productions at the Forest Meadows Amphitheatre on the campus of Dominican University with enrichment activities for families, Student Matinees, and opportunities for all ages to engage with the plays.
– A variety of performances, classes, and events at our Center for Performing Arts, Education, and Social Justice, completed in 2023.
– Returned Citizens Theatre Troupe, actors who are formerly incarcerated tell stories of importance and engage in community dialogue.

EDUCATION
– Play Power, Creative Dramatics instruction in grades K – 5
– Will Power, in-school Shakespeare instruction in grades 6 – 12
– The Teen Touring Company, a unique acting opportunity for teenagers
– Shakespeare Summer Camps
– Afterschool and Weekend Classes for Youth
– Acting Workshops for Adults
– Actor Training Programs in Acting, Technical Theatre, and Theatre for Social Justice.
– Arts Education for first generation students, system-impacted students, and young people with autism.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
– Social Justice informs all of our work.
– Shakespeare in Prison – Since 2003 we have used Shakespeare as a tool for personal transformation, institutional health, and to bring awareness to the national shame of mass incarceration. We have served 14 California State Prisons, serving men, women, and youth.
– Autobiographical Theatre-Making – actors tell personal stories through monologues, scenes, songs, and dance.
– Acting for Veterans – military veterans tell their stories through theatre.
– Drama for Re-Entry – people “rehearse” how they want to “act” when they return home.
– Anger Management – using Drama Therapy techniques.
– Programs for system-impacted students at Alameda Juvenile Hall, Marin Juvenile Hall, and Marin’s Community School.
