With support from the California Arts Council, seven Little Opera teaching artists will deliver three hundred hours of after-school artistic programming to thirty K-8 students from diverse backgrounds. Over the course of nine months, students will collaborate to write, compose, design, rehearse, and perform three original short operas. The program will take place at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
Little Opera is a community-based art education organization serving a diverse group of students in grades K-8. At Little Opera, students work together to write, compose, design, rehearse, and perform short works of musical theater (little operas). Our programs engage youth from area schools and occur at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Our core program is our after-school opera creation program. Over the course of nine months, students meet weekly with a small mixed-age cohort to receive multidisciplinary arts instruction and performance opportunities, and social-emotional learning activities grounded in the principles of positive youth development. Little Opera also provides summer programming in the form of week-long intensive opera creation camps. While our summer camps offer an abbreviated form of our year-long program, campers receive all of the benefits of our core program, including the opportunity to perform their original mini-opera at the end of their camp session.
