Project Description

With the support from the California Arts Council, Kitchens for Good (KFG) will work with 120 formerly incarcerated individuals in a culinary arts apprenticeship program to launch Eat Your Words – a space where spoken word and culinary arts provide healing, hope and expression. Through workshops with Movement BE, apprentices will learn to rewrite their own narratives through storytelling and culinary creations, culminating in community showcase events.

Organization Summary

KFG offers a 20 month, tuition-free certified culinary arts apprenticeship program that prepares 150 individuals with significant barriers to employment with the skills needed to become employed and self-sufficient. The program is comprised of five cohorts a year. Participants spend the first 12 weeks at Kitchens for Good and the following 15 months working and honing their skills.

The program has a strong track record: 85% employment rate of graduates, with 80% of graduates experiencing wage growth during 18 months of employment, and only a 5% recidivism rate (compared to the states 50% average).

KFG also operates food service social enterprises that provide valuable on-the-job training to the students. These enterprises included operating Cafe Luna at Moonlight Amphitheatre and operating Celebration Hall at the Jacobs Center in Southeastern San Diego. Both these venues seat more than 1000 and have full service kitchens on site.
