Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, KAMBARA+ will transition and grow its autonomy into a non-profit organization. With a large amount of artistic planning ahead, KAMBARA+ will require direct business administration to focus on the importance of making dances for communities in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

Organization Summary

Since the inception of KAMBARA+ we have produced work at ODC Theater, ZSpace, and curated by Dance Mission Theater, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and Jonathan Logan Foundation. We offer performances, community outreach, and programs for audience members to learn and connect with dance performances and Japanese American cultural experiences.

In 2020/21, KAMBARA+ with The Bridge Project and Dance Mission Theater, produced 3 anti-racism workshops for dance professionals. This virtual event served as training for dance practitioners who strive to further anti-racism in the performing arts. Skills were shared to identify racist practices and how to combat microaggressions in the workplace.

KAMBARA+’s current production is Nikkei/Descendants of the Sun, a dance project with two components, IKKAI means once:a transplanted pilgrimage and 二度と(NI DO TO):an XR pilgrimage. IKKAI is an evening length dance weaving modern dance, Japanese American (JA) Obon folk dance , and taiko, guiding audiences through a first-person narrative exploring the unjust incarceration of JAs, struggles for reparations and healing, and current/future solidarities with communities facing violence. 二度と implores audiences to intimately encounter the research and creative process of live performance through 360° dance film, poetry machine, AR Obon dance training, bystander intervention training, and Kintsugi reflections. Together they disrupt and awaken a new dance experience out of the proscenium and tie together the importance of making dances for communities.

KAMBARA+ also focuses on cross-cultural sharing of history to connect to present experiences using JA history as a tool for gathering and learning. JA traditions such as Obon/festival, Oshogatsu/New Year and workshops of Bon-Odori dance and the art of Kintsugi will engage participants as part of community engagement for the production. Instagram and Facebook accounts are a learning experience for followers, exposing followers to JA history, social justice, and healing.
