With support from the California Arts Council, Junior High Incorporated will continue paying rent during an unprecedented season of abrupt shutdowns, cancellations, and event postponement. While our pre-pandemic income has come primarily from hosting events, the CAC funds will secure our survival and longevity through a period of longterm shutdowns.
Junior High was launched in 2015 through a crowdfunding campaign and the efforts of a small community of artists trying to establish a physical space in Los Angeles that prioritizes the safety and self expression of young women. Since opening, we have shifted from a volunteer labor model to paid positions, upgraded our location and facility, and hosted over 2,000 community-oriented events that have never asked artists to pay to play. We are proud of our steadfast dedication to our ethos, to supporting marginalized artists, and to being home to over six years of events bolstering the creative pursuits of young women, artists of color, queer artists, and gender non-conforming people.
