Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, India Block Arts will continue its mission of providing a gallery and performance space to artists, free of charge, and engaging its community in building an annual large-scale art project.

Organization Summary

Annual Large-Scale Community Art Project
The mainstream conception of art in the United States is that it is a solo endeavor, based primarily on the genius of a single, talented individual. We believe this view places limits on what can be created: a single person is capable only of so much. We believe that the bonds of community formed around creating a large-scale work of art are more important than the art that is ultimately created. To facilitate this experience, each year, we organize the creation of a large-scale work of art.

Venue Rental
A space suitable for the exhibition of art and music is a valuable resource. For an artist, having a gallery show validates their creations and facilitates the sale of their work and its exposure to public audiences. We make our space at 1820 Harmon St available to artists and musicians, free of charge, to host gallery shows and concerts.

Workshop Use
In high cost of living areas, access to studio space is expensive and not always available to artists and musicians. We allow artists to access any tools, such as our Shaper Origin, that may be out-of-reach (in terms of cost) to artists at the beginning of their careers. We provide a large-format printing service to artists who otherwise cannot afford or do not have access to poster printing of their artwork or photography.
