History
Established in Oxnard in 1945, the Oxnard Housing Authority (OHA) owns and operates 520 units of federally subsidized low-income public housing. As of March, 2022, 14% of households are low income, 21% are very low income, and 61% are extremely low income. In addition, 154 households have someone with a disability and 327 of the households have children.
We’ve had a long history of providing quality art programming to our residents. Our programming have included presentations such as mariachi and folklorico dancers, mural projects, music classes, and cultural activities. One of the most memorable programming we had for over 10 years was Barrio Productions; it provided programming through production of videos and a weekly local television shows, narrated and produced by the youth. The project provided them with creative and marketable skills and open their minds to career opportunities. In 1996, it received a NAHRO Award of Merit in Housing and Community Development. Unfortunately, due to budgetary cuts, much of our programming was severely scaled down. We’ve slowly built back some programming thanks to community partnerships and small grants. In 2016, we partnered with local community organizations to provide youth art programming.
