With support from the California Arts Council, Dev/Mission will expand the STEAM Digital Music Lab, an afterschool program that uses digital music production and recording software as a gateway to build tech aptitude for low-income youth of color ages 14 to 21.
Dev/Mission offers six programs for low-income children, youth, and young adults to break the cycle of poverty in communities of color and diversify the tech industry:
1) STEAM Hub Exploratory Lab: K-12 children and youth explore STEAM concepts through after-school support, computer lab access, and summer camps
2) STEAM Digital Arts Program: Youth and young adults ages 14-21 build skills and interest in digital arts
3) Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Program: A 12-week program providing STEM training and skills to 16 to 24-year-old youth, providing connections to postsecondary education and tech career pathways
4) Community Technology Program: Graduates of the Pre-Apprenticeship program provide digital literacy training and tech support services to low-income residents of affordable housing, gaining valuable work experience and building professional skills while narrowing the digital divide in San Francisco’s affordable housing communities.
5) Fellowship Program (Full-Stack Dev Program): Over 6 months, fellows build upon their bootcamp experience in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to learn full-stack web development with Node.js. They also gain hands-on experience with user-centered product research and design by investigating local community needs with guidance from members of the Code for SF volunteer brigade.
6) Career and Education Pathway Placement and Support: including internships, apprenticeships, fellowships, postsecondary education, and full-time employment
