With support from the CAC, Creative Minds NYC, Inc (aka Story Pirates Changemakers) will expose students to the arts at two Title I California public schools. This will include school-wide assembly performances designed to excite and inspire students to write their own stories, in-class workshops to teach standards-based writing skills, and a culminating assembly, featuring stories written by the students during the residencies and performed by our cast of professional comedic actors.
Story Pirates Changemakers teach and inspire creative writing through high-quality literacy programs for underserved kids and schools, collect stories written by kids, then adapt them into sketch comedy and musical performances. Our programs have made learning more accessible, engaging, and effective for kids, schools, teachers, and families who need it most.
Story Pirates opened in Los Angeles a decade ago in partnership with the Geffen Playhouse, operating through their arts education programming. When the Geffen shifted their focus to exclusively serve older students, the Pirates continued in Los Angeles by obtaining a contract with the LAUSD as arts education service providers and professional development facilitators. To date we have provided programming in hundreds of California schools and have a weekly television program on KLCS, a public television station serving Los Angeles County.
