With support from the California Arts Council, BALKAN CULTURAL CENTER will maintain the year-round programming paid positions as well as maintain a onsite/online presence throughout the year with respect to events in Los Angeles as well as on all digital media, including digital streaming platform, website, newsletters, and social media.
Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF), is an annual 5-7-day competitive film festival which brings the American, Greek and Balkan communities of Southern California together at local theaters in June. LAGFF has been developing since its inauguration in 2007, alongside a new trend in European Cinema which is often called Greek Weird Cinema, owing its name to an ongoing line of uniquely personalized films.
Films range from 50 to 80 and include shorts, documentaries and features. The majority of films are represented by filmmakers who participate in Q&A sessions. 6-8 projects of Balkan origin are accepted each year through Discovery Days (formerly known as International Project Discovery Forum). The projects’ directors and/or producers are invited to participate in a series of development programs which culminate in a presentation to a panel of active film professionals, as well as attend open panel discussions on alternative ways of distribution, crowdfunding, coproduction, TV and web series production, and more.
LAGFF has presented retrospective programs of the works of such “giants” as John Cassavetes, Elias Kazan and Theo Angelopoulos; honored the achievements of writer/director Alexander Payne, Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, actors Gena Rowlands, George Chakiris, and more; consistently created the Orpheus Awards show; created educational and network opportunities with representatives from prestigious institutions and companies such as Sundance Institute, Film Independent, and more.
Due to Covid19, the 2020 festival was moved online set for the first weeks of October.
In 2022, LAGFF returned to the theaters.
In 2023 BCC inaugurated another major programmatic initiative — Global Greek Film Initiative (GGFI). Through GGFI we focus on a year-round presence that radiates out of Los Angeles and achieves national and international reach, strengthens our ties to Greek film community, and provides opportunities to emerging filmmakers and professionals with online film series, cultural exchange programs and more.
