With support from the CAC, ASCAB Capoeira Chico will initiate a 6-month course, two classes per week, one workshop per month, teaching fundamental arts of capoeira. Our targets are communities of color, those negatively affected by the pandemic and recent fires, and the economically vulnerable to make capoeira widely accessible.
ASCAB Capoeira provides children’s and adults’ mixed level capoeira classes. Each class includes physical training and conditioning in the movement arts of capoeira, instrument practice, and singing, which requires learning lyrics in Portuguese. The history and culture of capoeira is integrated into every class. Class concludes with roda, where students circle up and practice in pairs to the music. This is excellent community building as everyone participates on some level, including cheering everyone on.
Capoeira is a globally practiced art, so we host teachers from throughout California that we have networked with. Guest instructors hold workshops to hone different skills. Capoeira also utilizes a cord system (much like belts in East Asian martial arts styles), and we have biannual batizados, or tests for students who want to progress in the traditional cord system.
Our instructors and students have participated at many events and festivals in our immediate area and beyond.
We have done demonstrations at the CSU, Chico, Butte College, local farmer’s markets, elementary schools, Latin American cultural festivals, and more.
We are currently expanding our offerings to ensure that our capoeira academy serves everyone. With deep reflection and constant assessment we are always adapting to the needs and gaps in our program.
