Town of Yucca Valley Seeks Art Installation at the Yucca Valley Branch Library

Description

The Town of Yucca Valley has announced a Call for Artists to provide a temporary art installation at the southwest corner of Hwy 62 and Hwy 247, at the Yucca Valley Branch Library property.

The Town is seeking to work with local artists as part of its Public Art Program. The goal of the program is to support artists through the creation of public art to be placed throughout the Town to enhance the beauty and vibrancy of Yucca Valley, showcase artists and their work to a broader segment of the community, and bring art to unexpected places. The Town’s intent is to have rotating art at various locations, including the central library plaza at the intersection of Highways 62 and 247, at the very center of town.  During the winter holidays, the prominent location is home to the Town’s Christmas Tree display. The selected artist’s submission will be installed at the location in January 2025, remaining on display until November 2025. The selected submission will also be recognized in Town promotions and social media.

The 2024 installation currently on display is Infinite Connection by local metal sculptor Gubby Beck.  The public can continue to view the sculpture through November when the winter holiday season kicks off with the Town’s Christmas Tree taking its place. Gubby created this sculpture, stretching the boundary of how a form looks in more than one perspective. This also allows the viewer to interpret their own vision of what the sculpture portrays and opens the imagination to think outside the box. The shapes play with light and shadow, continuing its form and changing throughout the time of day as well as the seasons. Ms. Beck is currently featured on the Town’s Public Art Library Plaza webpage.

Artwork submitted for consideration for the 2025 installation should seek to enliven and transform the location. The art should be visible from a distance; therefore, artists may choose to utilize bold designs. Artists may submit more than one concept for consideration. All entries must be an original design, include all items required in the application packet, must be suitable for viewing by all ages and segments of the community, and be able to withstand outdoor weather elements.  Individuals, or teams of artists, from Yucca Valley and surrounding communities, are invited to share a detailed explanation of their artistic vision for this installation. Youth and student artists in grade 7th or above are also strongly encouraged to apply.

The selected artist will receive a $500 stipend and $1000 in reimbursements.  Application information is available online at www.yucca-valley.org or in person at the Yucca Valley Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.  Applications and requested documents must be submitted via email to publicart@yucca-valley.org by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024.
