Marin Theatre is located in the beautiful city of Mill Valley, California. Founded in 1966 as the Mill Valley Center for the Performing Arts, our organization has built a national reputation within the American theatre landscape and played an important role in the arts ecosystem of Marin county for nearly 60 years. With well-curated, high-quality, award-winning theatre and arts education at our core, today we aim to expand the scope of our programs to include events and unique artistic experiences to entertain and educate the people of Marin, the Bay Area, and beyond with the goal of transforming lives within the community that will build with our work.

Position Overview

Marin Theatre is seeking an experienced performing arts education professional to refresh and reboot a robust pre-pandemic education program. Independently develop, implement, and manage an impactful portfolio of classes, performances and events to promote lifelong learning and engagement in the performing arts. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the ideal Director of Education is a highly organized administrator with exceptional communication skills who will play a vital role in shaping the future of an organization that has positioned education as a fundamental component of our mission moving forward.

This is a full-time, in-person or hybrid position which requires 2-3 days of work in-office in Mill Valley as well as some nights and weekends.

Salary range: $70K – $80K

Responsibilities

• Direct all aspects of Marin Theatre’s education programs
• Expand the current offering of classes in-house
• Engage community organizations in offerings to take classes offsite
• Implement new education and engagement programs, to be developed independently and in collaboration with the artistic director and community partners
• Design curricula, lesson plans, and educational resources for learners of all ages
• Promote lifelong learning opportunities for our adult audience
• Develop and maintain vital education partnerships with cultural and education organizations and the school  districts
• Expand our educational reach in Marin County and develop new partnerships in the County
• Build and maintain an extensive and diverse database of teaching artists to support current and future plans
• Hire and manage teaching artists and performers
• Run Marin Theatre’s summer camp
• Facilitate the enrollment and intake of students
• Prepare and manage an annual budget to support educational programs in-house and throughout the community
• Collaborate with Grant Writer and Director of Development to identify and apply for grants to support educational programs
• Work with leaders and parents in underserved communities to create specialized programs
• Collaborate with Artistic Director to create short and long term program goals and revenue targets
• Implement assessment and evaluation methods to measure program effectiveness, goal achievement and participant outcomes
• Write program descriptions and marketing copy
• Collaborate with 3rd party marketing agency to manage the distribution of print and digital promotional materials including email blasts, brochures and flyers
• Oversee and support the creation and implementation of a special education program facilitated by the Special Education Program Coordinator
• Solicit and record feedback from students, parents and schools
• Schedule and moderate talkbacks, student matinees(SMAT), and other show-related activities
• Year 2 and thereafter: Expand offerings to produce performances by and for young people

Minimum Qualifications

• Extensive performing arts teaching experience
• Administration experience in a school or performing arts organization
• Experience developing curriculum
• Ability to represent and advocate for the theatre throughout the community
• Strong ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple competing assignments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Track record of engaging teaching artist classes for the K-12 audience
• Marketing experience
• K-12 or college teaching experience
• Adult education experience
• Strong network of Bay Area teaching artists
• Familiarity with Marin county schools and community organizations
