About

Located in San Francisco’s historic Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood, the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC) presents, offers, and celebrates Black art, artists, and culture through educational, innovative, enriching, and empowering programs and services that inspire and uplift the community. Within its 34,000-square-foot facility, the center provides a wide variety of art and cultural programming for youth, adults, and families, including visual, digital, and performance. The center features two indoor galleries, an outdoor gallery showcasing murals, and a 206-seat theater for live shows, film screenings, and seminars. Recognized as one of the premier Black arts and cultural institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area, AAACC houses some of the most celebrated African American arts and culture organizations in the region.

Job Summary

The African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC), located in Fillmore, San Francisco, seeks a highly skilled and motivated Managing Director. We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong background in people management, organizational development, and fundraising, with experience in the arts.

As the Managing Director, you will play a pivotal role in leading and inspiring both finance and creative teams. Your expertise in navigating city funding and compliance requirements will be critical in securing necessary resources. Adept at administration and operations, you will effectively balance the needs of these diverse teams, promoting collaboration and success.

In this role, you will manage the Program & Services Manager, Marketing & Communications Manager, Facility and Operations Manager, Financial Manager, Grants Manager, Grant Writers, and all contractors, including artists in programs, and partner with consultants and service providers engaged in strategic planning, financial planning—including tax preparation and filing, fundraising, public relations, social media, and marketing. You will provide strategic support and leadership, working alongside the Co-Executive Directors to supervise all administration and programming functions. This includes managing day-to-day operations, developing program strategies, building staff capacity, and ensuring the organization’s financial sustainability.

Reporting directly to the Co-Executive Directors, this position offers an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact in the community. Additionally, the ideal candidate must have the ability to execute the organization’s vision in a collaborative and inclusive manner. They should prioritize the team’s objectives over their own.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Management:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of AAACC and assume leadership in the absence of the Co-Executive Directors.
  • Develop and implement an organization-wide approach to administrative and programmatic alignment.
  • Establish systems and methods to measure and evaluate the organization’s impact and progress against goals.
  • Collaborate with the Co-Executive Directors and Operations team to develop annual priorities and monitor progress toward goals on a monthly basis.

Strategic Vision and Leadership:

  • Partner with the Co-Executive Directors to facilitate a vision-setting process with the management team and bring that vision to life through staff at all levels.
  • Facilitate strategic planning for the organization’s growth and ensure alignment of activities and programs.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to direct reports, supporting the development and efficacy of staff, teams, and initiatives.

Financial Management and Fundraising:

  • Oversee Administration, Operations, Facilities, HR, and IT functions, ensuring their effective implementation and coordination.
  • Support fundraising planning and implementation, collaborating with the Executive Director and Development team to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with key funding sources and strategic partners through coalition building.

Community Engagement and Collaboration:

  • Maintain and enhance existing relationships and develop new strategic relationships within the local community, community-based organizations, stakeholders, and leaders.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders on citywide programs and initiatives.
  • Onsite presence is required for events and programming on some evenings and weekends.

Profile of Candidate

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in people and operations management, with previous experience managing a nonprofit institution, social justice, advocacy, arts administration, or public policy organization, and at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in assessing and scaling organizations, developing infrastructure, and overseeing program development and evaluation.
  • Skilled in collaborating with the leadership team to make important decisions while balancing the competing needs of AAACC, the community, and funders.
  • Proven track record in staff development, team management, and facilitation of inclusive and innovative practices.
  • A thought leader, engaged communicator, and strategic planner with the ability to see disparate points of view.
  • Emotionally intelligent with a collaborative leadership style, an open mind, and an eagerness to learn.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and advocate for the needs and desires of diverse groups of community members, organizational leaders, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing and managing a non-profit annual operating budget, interpreting nonprofit financial reports, managing budgets, and navigating funding structures.
  • Experience with fundraising and funder relations for BIPOC organizations, including navigating federal, state, and local funding structures such as city, foundation, and corporate grant-making agencies.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills with a commitment to equity, justice, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, and able to manage multiple demands and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and MS Office Suite (especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends as required.

  • A strong awareness of power, privilege, and equity.

Start Time Frame: We aim to have someone in place by Fall 2023. If possible, AAACC would welcome the Managing Director by late October.
