The Towne Street Theatre creates, develops and produces original work that is reflective of the African-American experience and perspective for theater. These experiences, whether historical, contemporary, or futuristic, define our cultural aesthetic. The artistic vision of the theatre is broad in nature, but microscopic by design. It provides a safe theatre home for a diverse group of artists to be free in their efforts to create and/or work on pieces they would not normally be able to accomplish against the large backdrop of Hollywood. Since 1993, we have provided an oasis for both artists and audiences looking for theater that represents them and their experiences, as well as those seeking something new and different. In this current climate of discord and denial, our purpose is strengthened. It is more important than ever that we continue to tell our stories, which are a part of not only Black History, but also our shared American history. We strongly believe in the healing power of art and are committed to remaining a place where social justice conditions are explored fully and truthfully. Our purpose continues to be a theatre reflective of the diversity of California and the nation where we expand understanding, foster respect, and harmony by portraying the universality of the human experience through our programming.
