San Francisco Mime Troupe was created in1959 to present a new kind of theater for the Bay Area and well beyond. We are a Tony-award winning, democratically-run collective mixing races, cultures, generations, gender choices and lived experiences. We exist to poke sacred cows, upset apple carts, write and act and play and sing to expose injustice and oppression and inequality. Our aim is to reach as many people as possible with as much heat and light as we can generate. We are pioneers of political satire: unlike political protest, SFMT doesn’t tell people what to do about a problem or a regime, doesn’t tell us who to vote for. Instead, the Troupe catches audiences’ attention with big characters and exaggeration and music and it holds up a funhouse mirror of our own human condition. We present musicals for free in parks and public places; we create ear-catching radio plays; we guide young performers to try their voices as writers. Nothing about SFMT, including our purpose, is “business as usual.”
