The Mariachi Women’s Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We recognize and empower mariachi women and girls who perform in this male-dominated Mexican tradition by featuring their talents in live concerts and festivals, thereby supporting access, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the performing and cultural arts. We also implement educational initiatives that support and promote community engagement in research and understanding of mariachi women’s history, culture, and lived experiences. Our founder, Dr. Leonor Xochitl Perez, has been a mariachi performer for 45 years. In an effort to reverse the erasure of mariachi women’s history, contributions, and performance, she launched the Mariachi Women’s Festival in Los Angeles and the Trailblazing Women of Mariachi Music Exhibit in 2014. These efforts are intended to support women’s growth and resilience from a culturally relevant and strength-based approach.
