The Controller will be the technical leader for the Finance Department, through their strong knowledge about GAAP, accounting practices, reporting, and business systems interconnectivity. They will accomplish this through their advanced technical capacity with financial software and keen expertise as a leader in internal and external audit processes. The Controller will manage the accounting system and the connectivity of all other museum software systems with Finance and will develop a unified tracking, reporting and analysis process. The Controller will recommend sophisticated strategies for integration of systems in this complex non-profit organization. The Controller will manage the tracking and reconciliation of MOCA’s largest asset, its endowment. This role is responsible for supervising the Senior Accountant and interacting across departments to ensure accurate monthly and annual financial closes. This role will support the CFO with compliance, audit, tax and other technical actions and reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Track, monitor and develop reports on $180+ million investments for management, board, and audit review.
• Monthly reconciliation along with appropriate Journal Entries of the investments, including the endowment funds, the management of endowment distributions and releases for time and purpose.
• Review/coordinate/perform reconciliation annually of permanent collection sub ledger with the registrar.
• Supervise the General Ledger systems and connections to all other museum department systems, ensuring best practices for internal controls.
• Support the CFO in tracking debt covenants and create ratios and dashboard for key indicators of financial health.
• Co-lead (with the Finance Director) all monthly and annual closes with a focus on all sources of revenue, releases from restrictions, accruals, and reconciliation of special projects. 
• Create and process all quarterly draft Statements of Financial Activity, Statements of Financial Position and Cashflow statements.
• Oversight and development of systems to account for revenue and expenses for government and foundation grants and prepare regular financial reports and requests for payments from government agencies. 
• Lead the financial general ledger recording and reporting process for all acquisition and board councils, Advancement and Director events, projects, and activities.
• Co-Lead the department in preparing fiscal year-end audit schedules and preliminary federal and state tax returns for review, approval, and submission by the CFO and leadership, (e.g., 990 and other tax returns, 1099, etc.).
• Work closely with the CFO and Finance team members to create, sustain, and monitor appropriate and effective forecasting models for cash-flow and budgets.
• Lead the MOCA stores, box office, admissions, membership process to achieving their goals for accurately recording activity, including inventory, sales taxes, and POS and other system reviews and reconciliation.
• Review and reconcile of online accounts such as PayPal, eBay, Amazon, and Shopify. 
• Supervise the Senior Accountant and approve all proposed journal entries and uploads on a monthly and annual basis.
• Lead Finance and Advancement weekly and annual reconciliations of gifts and grants for accuracy, appropriateness, and donor purpose and time restriction, focusing on releases and use of funds.
• Attend and participate in regular national and local industry meetings, including AAMA and LA Area Museum Finance Roundtable.
• Professionalism in all forms of communication.
• Develop systems for tracking fixed assets, capital spending and large project spending.
• Collaborate with the CFO and the Director’s office on tracking and providing costing scenarios for the BOT Strategic
• Planning committee and the museum strategic plan.
• Lead the museum in assessment and action on appropriate revenue and expense tracking systems.
• Perform appropriate back up duties for Senior Accountant and/or Finance Director, as necessary.
• Support the Chief Financial Officer in their role as liaison to Finance and Investments and the Audit Committees of the Board of Trustees.
• Provide routine and ad-hoc analysis and reporting as needed.

Education and Experience:

MBA or CPA preferred, BA/BS in accounting or finance required. Minimum 5 years’ supervisory experience, non-profit, fund accounting, fiscal analysis, and business accounting in a non-profit, museum sphere preferred. A posture of maturity and a desire to build and lead a team. Advanced knowledge of Finance and Advancement systems such as Fundriver, Altru/Blackbaud, MS Excel, General Ledger Accounting Software, QuickBooks, Reporting software such as Fathom, Bill.com, and Paycom. Experience with selecting, developing, transition and training on new finance systems.
