Responsibilities:
The Curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego will define and guide the exhibition program at both North and Central locations. The Curator will display a strong interest and knowledge of contemporary art of today, acting as a guiding light for the introduction of innovative and renowned artists to our tri-national region (San Diego, Tijuana, Kumeyaay), while supporting the growth of regional artists. Their innovative approach towards contemporary art will support an institution on the cutting edge with a mission to “question everything”, including what art is, who makes it, and where it should be presented.

In consultation with and under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Curator will align the artistic program with the organization’s goals and strategic plan, leading the curatorial department. With an eye toward diverse, provocative, awe-inspiring, and immersive works that reflect ICA’s mission and connection to global themes, they will produce transformative exhibitions and work with an arts committee to expand outdoor works collection holdings. In coordination with the Director of Operations, they will define the curatorial calendar and ensure the organized and timely installation and project management of exhibitions. Working closely with the Director of Advancement, the Curator will provide the required information for fundraising and marketing of the annual exhibition program, and assist in the cultivation of civic, philanthropic, and governmental relationships. With the Director of Education, they will advise on the programmatic direction in alignment with exhibition thematics, considering public
programming and outreach opportunities.

As a host, community ambassador, and content provider, the ICA Curator must be proficient in leading projects and discussions that are both intellectually rigorous and accessible. They will write for general museum audiences in dynamic ways that expand art interpretation and discussions beyond traditional art historical narratives and prioritize more insightful and inclusive perspectives. A demonstrated commitment to cultivating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion by amplifying the voices of women, LGBTQI+ artists, and artists of color within and outside our community is essential, as is an understanding and appreciation of the border’s multi-ethnic history.

The ideal candidate will possess the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

Curatorial Excellence:
● Demonstrable success conceptualizing, designing and implementing compelling and
visitor-centered curatorial and collection strategies
● Knowledge of contemporary art history
● Active engagement in the local, national and international art communities
● Cross-cultural competency

● Knowledge of best practices for outdoor collections management
● Experience with artistic research and proven success with published essays or other
writing
● Innovative approaches in the use of technologies for alternative exhibition presentations
● Knowledge of public placemaking
● Considerate of evolving audiences and community needs

● Ability to confidently present information both verbally and in writing

Education
Advanced degree in art history, curatorial studies, or closely related field or commensurate experience over five years required. Qualified candidates will bring expertise in organizing and curating museum exhibitions, and academic writing.

Compensation & Benefits
Full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $60,000-80,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include $400 toward monthly medical insurance premium, retirement plan enrollment, paid time off, nine paid holidays in a calendar year, staff appreciation days, discounts at select Balboa Park restaurants and shops, and free admission to member museums.
