POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Administrative Intern I will function as a student architect, assisting the Department’s staff architect with the architectural design review process in preparation for the Cultural Affairs Commission meetings. This position is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on projects that are at the intersection of architecture and art.   The Department of Cultural Affairs is the City’s leading, progressive arts and cultural agency. DCA empowers Los Angeles’s vibrant communities by supporting and providing access to quality visual, literary, musical, performing, and educational arts programming; managing vital cultural centers; preserving historic sites; creating public art; and funding services provided by arts organizations and individual artists.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

●        Work with applicants on preparation of street light and above ground facilities applications

●        Coordinate with Executive Secretary on the Commission agenda

●        Help coordinate architectural submissions

●        Research building and planning codes

●        Assist with presentation and participate in project staff meetings

●        Participate in site visits, which may require safety shoes

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ability to work a part-time, consistent schedule of up to three (3) days per week, eight (8) hours per day. DCA’s headquarter offices are located in downtown LA. The position does not include health benefits, vacation, or sick days. Part-time positions do accrue Compensated Paid-Time-Off starting six (6) months after starting a part-time position. Candidates must have a valid California Driver’s License and have the ability to lift 20–35 pounds.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a sophomore or higher standing at a 4-year college or university, or be a graduate student majoring in architecture. Applicants must have a legal right to work in the United States.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Competitive applicants will have the following qualifications:

▪          Strong administrative skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Bluebeam

▪          Capacity to maintain a professional disposition and positive attitude, to abide by City protocols, and deal tactfully and effectively with the public, supervisors, and other City employees, and City contractors/artists.

▪          Interest in working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to multitask, be self-motivated and highly organized, and employ effective time management strategies.

METHOD TO EVALUATE CANDIDATES

Final selection will be based on panel interviews with eligible candidates pending a review of applications received. Interviewers may also contact present and former supervisors, as well as review City Personnel files (if applicable) as part of a candidate’s evaluation. All candidates will be notified regarding the final results of the selection process.
