Exhibition and Audience Engagement Intern:

The Exhibitions and Audience Engagement Intern will work closely with the Vice President of Exhibitions and Art Director. The intern will focus on supporting the traveling Poster Display of “A Life in Pieces: The Diary and Letters of Stanley Hayami”. Just a teenager when World War II began, Stanley Hayami began writing a diary about his struggles and ambitions as a young person coming of age with one critical difference – he was writing from inside the Heart Mountain concentration camp. By 1944, Hayami was drafted into the legendary U.S. Army 100th/442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team and continued to document his experience by writing letters back home to his family. At the age of 19, Hayami was killed in battle while trying to rescue a fellow soldier, but his legacy lives on through his diary and letters.

“A Life in Pieces” will be an XR (extended reality) experience where his diary and words are presented in a virtual world through smart phones or other VR devices. His story will be accompanied by a traveling Poster Display and interpretive activities that illustrates the complex notions of democracy that young people encounter whenever it is challenged. Through his diary written while in camp, viewers will experience the internal conflict that a young person experienced as he sought to find his place in an America that promised hope and opportunity, but was fraught with challenges for people who looked or appeared “different.

The intern will work with the project team to develop interpretive activities for the Poster Display (25% time), beta test these activities with local focus groups for efficacy and purpose (25% time), create and package these activities (25% time), and develop a letter of offering and a list of potential locations to send this package to (25% time).
