Project Description

Women’s Audio Mission (WAM) is a San Francisco/Oakland-based nonprofit that uses music & media to attract 4,000+ at-risk girls/women per year (96% low income/91% of color) to free STEM/creative technology training, mentoring, and job placement to amplify their voices, stories and creativity and inspire them to become the next generation of innovators. WAM uses the technology-fueled environments of professional recording studios – the only ones in the world built/run by women – to attract women/girls to STEM studies, change their relationship to technology and fight the gender gap in the tech and recording industries.

WAM addresses 2 issues:

1. < 5% of the people creating the sounds/messages that make up the soundtrack of our lives are women. 2. Alarming 70% decline in women enrolling in college STEM programs. Highlights: -Named “Best Hope for the Future of Music” 2019 by SF Weekly -4,500+ classes given to 18,000 women/girls -Placed 850+ women in jobs at Dolby, Pixar, Google, etc.
