Marketing Manager


Position Summary:

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is actively seeking a Marketing Manager to help plan and implement our marketing, communications, and advertising activities.

The Marketing Manager should contain a breadth of knowledge of current marketing trends and best practices, with specific insights for arts organizations and Bay Area-based non-profit organizations. They should be comfortable analyzing market research and customers’ behavior, creating strategic marketing plans, creating and maintaining spreadsheets of marketing data, and analyzing data to interpret ROI and KPI metrics.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Marketing Manager manages and executes all marketing and communications programs for SFGMC. They are responsible for meeting annual earned revenue budgeted goals, and for ensuring that the SFGMC brand is promoted effectively in print, digital and social media platforms to achieve maximum awareness of the organization’s mission, activities, and identity.

Ultimately, the Marketing Manager should help us achieve our business goals through building strong marketing campaigns, with a keen sense of the Chorus’ mission and community work.

The Marketing Manager reports to the Executive Director; collaborates regularly with the Artistic Director, Operations Director, Development Director, and Patron Services Manager; with Board and Chorus leadership, and with singers and other community volunteers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain an annual Marketing budget for the Chorus, including delineation of all Marketing-related expenses and projection of earned revenue.
  • Manage and implement all marketing and promotional campaigns to meet subscription and single ticket sales goals, and to develop audiences for all Chorus and Ensemble performances.
  • Produce all marketing and development promotional materials and collateral, including: print and digital materials, advertisements, posters, social media banners, promotional videos, corporate sponsorship sales materials, concert playbills and other programs, postcards, press releases, e-newsletter and e-blasts, fundraising event invitations, etc.
  • Create robust marketing plans for each Season concert, and purchase all print, digital and retargeting advertisements to best achieve ticket sales and revenue goals.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of SFGMC’s website, institutional marketing, and brand identity: responsible for design, written content, functionality and ease of user experience/interaction, identifying economical and user-friendly donation and purchasing platforms, and ensuring ongoing website maintenance and regular/timely updates; identify community and arts partnerships that further SFGMC’s mission and create broader awareness of the organization’s activities.
  • Email newsletter: maintain Take Note email newsletter, create rollout strategy for emails and timeline, create all emails, design all graphics for newsletter, create preview tests of each email, copy edit newsletters, maintain list data.
  • Coordinate with Patron Services Manager to ensure effectiveness of ticket sales, subscription package sales, etc.
  • Coordinate with Social Media Manager to keep content updated on SFGMC social media and establish a robust posting schedule.
  • Coordinate with the Public Relations team to maintain excellent press and media relations.
  • Engage and manage vendors, including: graphic and website designers, videographers, box office support, printing services, and others as appropriate.
  • Direct Mail initiatives: coordinating with direct mail vendors, overseeing and maintaining graphic design for direct mail, maintenance of list data.
  • Playbill: assemble all Chorus season concert playbills, aggregate all data, manage Chorus staff for deadlines, create or outsource necessary graphics for each playbill, engage with sponsors and vendors for ads, develop media kit, coordinate with playbill vendor for final delivery, copy edit playbill, handle all questions/concerns.
  • Write and copy-edit content for concert programs, e-newsletters, social media outlets; and provide creative/design and copy-editing support for fundraising appeals, event invitations, e-blasts, and online donation platforms.
  • Merchandise: handle all merchandise matters, including maintenance of inventory, sales reconciliations, financial matters, sales strategy, online sales fulfillment, marketing plans for merchandise sales, rollouts of new merchandise items, identify and connect with vendors for merchandise, oversee and coordinate all graphic design for merchandise.
  • Support: create, launch, and maintain all support protocols for the Chorus, using the current Zendesk portal, and all social media inquiries, phone messages, and emails.
  • Engage SFGMC’s singers, alumni, and community volunteers to assist in creating excitement and promoting marketing initiatives to promote ticket sales.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of marketing, communications and/or public relationships experience, or 5-7 years in a customer service/sales and promotion-focused environment.
  • Excellent/persuasive written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly articulate the organization’s vision and mission, artistic programs.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and database management skills.
  • Attentive to details and the need for accuracy.
  • Experience with e-marketing programs and the use of social media platforms in marketing.
  • Experience with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, and Mailchimp.
  • Ability to manage expense budgets and prior achievements achieving earned revenue goals.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate staff, vendors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective at managing multiple changing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; confidence to interact comfortably and graciously with performing artists, community volunteers, staff, and diverse populations.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Commitment to SFGMC’s mission.
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment; performing arts organization preferred.
