Technical Specialist, Builder

Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Technical Specialist, Builder is responsible for fabrication and finish of exhibit furniture, fixtures and cabinetry for use in museum exhibitions and displays. This position provides front line oversight of woodshop activities, maintenance, and workflow.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Exhibits

Translate drawings, sketches, written and oral instructions into well-crafted exhibitry, scenic treatments and casework.
Plan, order materials, and build to a high level of finish within a given timeline.
Exercise judgment in details and finish of components to manage quality control, and keep production on schedule.
Safely work in a tight woodshop with other stakeholders.
Keep shop clean, maintain equipment, and notify supervisor of unsafe practices. 
Create templates for installation and participate in final placement and installation when necessary.
 

Administration 

Maintain shop inventory and order materials and supplies as needed.
Track workflow and provide project status updates to production and exhibition teams.
Provide exhibit project teams with price estimates for materials; manage payment of invoices for materials purchased.
Participate in organizational infrastructure and management of back of house materials storage locations.
Knowledge of and adherence to personal and workplace safety procedures.
Participate in implementation of safety and equipment training programs.
 

EXPERIENCE

Ability to display and encourage visitor and internal customer service, take and share responsibility and treat others with respect.
2-3 years related experience.
English language proficiency in both spoken and written form.
Ability to perform all related functions of Associate Preparators. Knowledge of museum best practices around artifacts and objects.
Ability to train, coach and direct the work of other technical staff that will be assigned to projects during periods of peak production.
Well versed in a wide variety of woodshop materials and techniques and able to learn new skills to achieve objectives.
Knowledge of the limits of materials for safety and security of displays.
Ability to problem-solve, suggest alternatives and value-engineer given assignments.
Experience with interior carpentry and finish work.
Ability to safely operate shop tools, such as drills, saws, grinders, benders, etc.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Museum environment involves both indoor and outdoor working conditions.
Ability to travel between OMCA locations, and other travel as required by position responsibilities.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Requires strenuous physical work including lifting, pushing and pulling.
Moderate to loud noise from production events, machinery, equipment or vehicles.
Working near mechanical parts.
Exposure to dirt, dust and fumes.
