About the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj)

The Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj) showcases a unique collection of permanent and rotating exhibits chronicling more than  a century of Japanese American history. JAMsj was founded in 1987 and is dedicated to the  collection, preservation and sharing of Japanese American history, culture and arts with an  emphasis on the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. Of particular importance to JAMsj is  capturing and telling the story of the WWII Internment of Japanese Americans. 

Executive Director Position Description: The primary responsibilities of the JAMsj Executive Director are 1) management of the museum  including museum operations, 2) supervision of volunteers 3) working with the museum Board  of Directors (BOD) to achieve the museum’s fundraising and strategic goals and 4) building  relationships with community and city partners. 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

Oversees day to day operations of JAMsj  

  • Coordinates with volunteer leadership for volunteer scheduling, scheduling of group  tours and supervises maintenance of museum calendar 
  • Coordinates with Public Programs Team to develop programs and community outreach  activities which further the mission of JAMsj and benefit the community 
  • Coordinates with Collections Committee to ensure items donated are appropriately  reviewed, accessioned, conserved, preserved, and cataloged 
  • Coordinates with Exhibit Team to develop and implement exhibits in line with the  mission of JAMsj 
  • Oversees management of retail and online store  
  • Coordinates with Facilities Team to ensure maintenance and safe operation of the  museum building, grounds, and equipment. 
  • Oversees Financials Team and coordinates with treasurer on all accounting and  financial operations 
  • Coordinates with Marketing Team to ensure website, social media and newsletters are  in line with mission of museum 
  • Coordinates with Fund Development Team to identify and secure funds, donations and  grants to help ensure continued operation of the museum. Responsible for appropriate  monitoring of grants and required reporting. Oversees tracking of donations, grants and  other funds and acknowledgement letters. 
  • Coordinates with the Board of Directors regarding day to day activities and long-term  planning. Attends board meetings and provides leadership to achieve JAMsj strategic  goals. 
  • Coordinates with leadership of Special Projects for successful implementation.

Administrative Services 

  • Supervises staff and volunteers  
  • Membership: Works to increase membership numbers and supervises staff to maintain  membership database and coordinates annual renewal activities

Community Outreach 

  • Serves as museum spokesperson and represents the museum’s interests in conjunction  with the Board of Directors
  • Works with community and city partners to achieve mutually beneficial objectives. In  particular, seeks to make Japantown a more well-known destination. 

Skills, Expertise and Abilities Required: 

  • Supervisory skills for the administration, financial management and operations of a  mainly volunteer organization with an annual budget of $250,000 and above • Proficiency with the use of the following software: MS Office Suite, Quickbooks, Google  Suite 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (authored sample documents will be  required) 
  • Adept at Social Media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram 
  • Ability to serve as an articulate spokesperson and representative for the museum • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and guidance 
  • Participates in educational activities and museum associations to keep abreast of the  latest developments in small museum and historical society management. 

Skills and Expertise Desired: 

  • Experience with the operations of a nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated success with community outreach and fundraising, including interactions  with donors and grant-making organizations and development of relationships with  potential grant organizations and donors
  • Experience operating a retail store
  • Experience with the maintenance of physical structures
  • Knowledge of current professional museum policies, operations and success strategies • Knowledge relevant to transforming the museum to a hybrid (both physical and virtual) experience to increase the number of museum visitors 

Qualifications: The Executive Director will have a relevant Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent  combination of education and experience, and a minimum of 3 years of work experience  demonstrating the ability to successfully support a nonprofit organization, manage a small  historical museum staffed primarily by volunteers and increase the museum’s size and breadth  and numbers of museum visitors and supporters. 

Location: The Executive Director will be based at the Japanese American Museum of San  Jose in the Japantown area of San Jose, CA

Salary, Work Schedule and Reporting: This is a full time, salaried position with a salary range  of $60,000 to $85,000 depending on experience. The work schedule has some flexibility and  some duties may be performed remotely. The position reports to the JAMsj President.
