Collage Publishing Workshop

Description

At Kolaj Institute, the book is understood as another place where collage can be experienced, not only as documentation of artwork but as a meaningful art encounter in itself. For collage artists, publishing offers a way to move beyond the gallery wall and consider how reproduction, distribution, and printed form can expand the life of their work.

Collage Publishing Workshop is a four-week virtual/online workshop in which artists turn a body of work or a project into a zine, art catalog, monograph, or book. Participants will explore models of publishing, types of book projects, production steps, printing, copyright and appropriation, launching, marketing, and strategies for preparing publishing projects to move into the world.

The workshop asks how a book can function as an exhibition, an artwork, a document, and a vehicle for audience-building. Can a book provide the same kinds of experiences that exhibitions have offered artists for so long? How does publishing change the way collage is received, collected, shared, and remembered? What happens when collage enters the world through reproduction and distribution rather than through the singular original work on the gallery wall?

Participants will finish the workshop with a publishing project or a detailed plan for one, along with a deeper understanding of publishing’s role in their art practice.

OUTCOME
Artists in the Collage Publishing Workshop will develop a deeper understanding of the role publishing can play in their own art practice. Participants will work toward creating a publishing project, such as a zine, art catalog, monograph, or book, or develop a detailed plan for one.

Program Context Paragraph
Collage Publishing Workshop is part of Kolaj Institute’s Artist Development Program, a collection of four core workshops for self-motivated artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop and expand their collage-based artist practice and work toward professional goals, particularly in exhibitions and publishing.
