Art Director

The Art Director establishes the conceptual and stylistic direction for all designed materials to ensure the SCI-Arc brand is consistent, and all materials service the institute’s mission. This position manages and oversees the graphic designers, freelance photographers, printers, and anyone else involved in the development of a given project. The Art Director is responsible for keeping all designed materials on schedule and in budget. Reporting to the Director/CEO, this position works closely with the graphic designer, department heads, and faculty to enhance the effectiveness of all designed materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Manage day-to-day operational aspects of design projects, managing workflow and process
  • Manage external resources including transcription services, photography services, and printers, timelines, schedules
  • Manage designers, outside vendors, freelance designers/photographers, and internal departments involved in a given project
  • Manage project budgets including costs and contingencies
  • Oversee vendor management including budgets, timelines, tracking and monitoring vendor progress
  • Provide updates on overall project task completion to the applicable department head/faculty and other SCI-Arc leadership as directed
  • Review all designed items before passing to department head or faculty
  • Ensure deliverables are accurate and on time
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with and between vendor service providers, staff and faculty
  • Use a strong visual language across multiple platforms
  • Understand the marketing and communications goals and objectives of the various department heads and faculty and find ways to meet these goals with appropriate graphic solutions 
  • Generate design solutions from concept to completion
  • Communicate directly with Academic Directors, department heads, and faculty for input and feedback
  • Lead creative presentations to internal clients
  • Oversee and direct the Graphic Designer to ensure all work meets project goals and is in line with the SCI-Arc brand
  • Communicate directly with outside vendors such as printers, web developers, etc. to ensure quality control and branding is upheld
  • Art direct photographers to document events and any other special projects needed for communication materials
  • Ensure the SCI-Arc brand is implemented in all communications materials
  • Research and recommend new printing and graphics techniques
  • Maintain electronic files to be readily accessible for editing or printing upon demand 


  • Bachelor's degree or greater in graphic design or closely related field
  • Minimum 6-8 years’ experience in graphic design
  • Portfolio showing sophisticated use of typography combined with photography that demonstrates ability to implement identity extensions across various print materials and web platforms
  • Ability to manage time to produce successful designs in creative but fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage many projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal, team and leadership skills
  • Ability to listen to and understand big picture goals of project
  • Collaborate well with other creatives
  • Experience with a variety of print materials and pre-press requirements
  • High proficiency in Design, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office and familiar with the capabilities of HTML, Flash, CSS and xml
