Full-Time/ Exempt

The Japanese American National Museum mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Based in Los Angeles’ historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the National Museum ( is recognized as one of the nations’ premier cultural museums. In 2010, the Japanese American National Museum was awarded America’s highest honor for museum, the National Medal from the IMLS.

Collections Manager is responsible for the overall operations of Collections Management and Access Unit that include the supervision of CMA staff and consultants as well as the maintenance of the permanent collection, registration, digitization, conservation, inventory, storage, licensing, and loans. The Collections Manager position is also responsible for the strategic development and implementation of activities and resources related to collections care, management and access. Serves as staff liaison to the board Collections Task Force.

Master’s in Museum Studies or related field preferred. Five years of prior experience working with a museum based collections or archive. Must have a thorough understanding of standard museum registration practices and collections management principles as they relate to museum, archival, and research collections. Must be familiar with the documentation and preservation standards for each type of material. Must have experience with digital imaging and managing data and as a courier /organizing appropriate courier services for artifacts. Minimum 2 years’ experience supervising staff, interns and volunteers. Ability to work in a team-environment and be a self-starter. Experience with ethnic history/culture collections and community based organizations a plus. Familiarity with JA/Asian American community a plus.

Requires strong interpersonal skills including ability to communicate with staff and public both verbally and in writing. Ability to train and constructively evaluate staff and volunteers. Ability to write reports as well as grant and project proposals. Familiarity with TMS collections management database.
