Director of Audience Development & Engagement
Berkeley Symphony


Berkeley Symphony seeks a creative, analytical, and ambitious Director of Audience Development and Engagement. In partnership with the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director, this full-time, senior management position is responsible for the strategy, management, and execution of marketing, sales, and communication programs aimed at increasing brand awareness and understanding, and acquiring and retaining audience members. The goals of this opportunity are to maximize earned revenue, broaden the Symphony’s patron base, and increase audience loyalty.

Successful candidates will be highly analytical, experienced in research, and skilled at communicating emotion and storytelling through written, visual, and media campaigns. Core job responsibilities include: oversight of print, electronic, and social media campaign planning; analytics, evaluation, and reporting; content creation; and budget management. As a member of the Symphony’s team, the Director of Audience Development and Engagement provides the best possible customer service, communications, project management, and support to all constituencies of the organization.

Qualifications/Experience: Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • At minimum, a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and four (4) years in a related position
  • Extensive history of revenue enhancement and customer/audience/patron growth
  • Experience with database and information systems (ex. Tessitura, Theatre Manager, other CRM platforms; IT and/or computer programming is not required)
  • Creativity, ambition, and resourcefulness
  • Adeptness at data analysis, management, and ROI measurement
  • Outstanding communications skills
  • Experience in print/physical, electronic, and audio and audio/visual media, marketing, and sales
  • Basic web (HTML, CSS, coding) and basic graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign) skills preferred
  • The ability to act with discretion and handle sensitive, confidential information
  • Mastery of organization, planning, paying attention to details, handling many projects simultaneously, and demonstrating good judgment and maturity in decision-making
  • Availability to work occasional nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to lift up to 42 lbs. on occasion
  • A sense of humor, positive attitude, and a team player approach 

Responsibilities: The Director of Audience Development and Engagement is expected to be able to be responsible for the following duties, as well as additional ones, as assigned:

  • Develop annual work plans, including marketing, sales, and communications campaigns, and associated budgets
  • For campaigns, set goals, implement tactics for measurement and A/B testing, and analyze effectiveness and ROI
  • Lead the conceptualization, production, and distribution of all promotional and communications efforts, including print/physical, electronic (email, social media), media campaigns, and press engagements
  • Develop rich written content aimed at telling the story of the Symphony and continually engaging audiences for publication through web and social media channels; develop accompanying visuals in-house as needed
  • Manage Berkeley Symphony written and visual brand standards
  • Utilizing the TRG Arts Data Center, Google Analytics, email provider, and other tools, conduct audience research and segmentation to increase market penetration and efficiency
  • Supervise the Patron Services Manager and efforts related to subscription/season ticket and single ticket campaigns, including telesales and in-house mailings
  • Work in partnership with third-party marketing consulting firm on audience research, branding, and technology selection and implementation (including website redesign, CRM and email service integration, and electronic and social media integration)
  • Work in partnership with third-party vendors, including graphic designers, printers, mail houses, photographers, videographers, concert program annotators, media channels, and an advertising sales firm, among others, on the creation, management, and publication of assets and collateral
  • Represent Berkeley Symphony at all concert, donor, and engagement events
  • FLSA Status and Availability: Full time and FLSA exempt. The position is available immediately. 

Compensation: Compensation, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
