Membership Coordinator
Lux Art Institute

Encinitas, CA

Lux Art Institute, a non-profit visual art organization in Encinitas, seeks a Membership Coordinator to perform overall hospitality and visitor services duties. The successful candidate will have prior customer service experience, and show demonstrated interest in contemporary art and museum environments. The Membership Coordinator will be responsible and trustworthy, with strong communication and interpersonal skills. With the uncanny ability to make people feel immediately welcome, the Coordinator will be the first contact visitors have with Lux, and will work to maintain a positive and engaging connection to visitors, members, and volunteers.

This is a full-time hourly position, Monday through Friday with occasional weekend and evening shifts. Health benefits and paid time off are offered.

  • Prepare studio, gallery, and front desk for open hours
  • Create and manage a superb visitor experience by welcoming visitors at the admissions desk during open hours and events
  • Act as a Lux spokesperson, educate visitors about the current Resident Artist, advertise upcoming events, and encourage membership signups
  • Maintain cash box, record and deposit all admission and membership revenue; report all revenue and numbers to administrative team weekly
  • Manage and develop Lux retail operation; oversee Lux store displays in lobby and at events, and build awareness of Lux products and gifts
  • Complete accurate visitor log, and input new membership information into member tracking system (eTapestry)
  • Perform maintenance on member tracking system and develop a system to process out dated information, ensuring all information is up to date and accurate
  • Develop effective programming for member involvement and retention; participate in member/volunteer recognition efforts
  • Create connections with local volunteers, encouraging further involvement through help with programming, including art camps, events, and committees
  • Establish a structured, systematic program of membership relations that will outlast changes in staff and ensure long-term relations with members, donors, and volunteers
  • Assist with advertising of upcoming events with targeted messaging for different member and volunteer groups; collaborate with marketing team to create effective ads and visibility for programs
  • As needed, work with Development team to support donor relations and gift acknowledgment
  • Provide programmatic support for special events, education programs, and general museum day-to-day

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, with ability to prioritize multiple requests
  • Good decision making skills, tactful, good listener
  • Willingness to take initiative and search out answers; confident in collaboration or asking for help
  • Creative, curious, community-oriented
  • Enthusiasm for meeting and working with a wide range of individuals; natural cultural sensitivity
  • Comfort with social media and web technologies
  • Ability to use multi-line phone system
  • Deep interest in visual and creative arts preferred, with knowledge of arts and culture in San Diego


  • Bachelor's Degree preferred; prior customer service experience a must
  • Strong knowledge of member tracking systems, like eTapestry, Wufoo, or other CRM databases
  • Previous experience with non-profit fundraising and membership a plus
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals
  • Warm, welcoming demeanor with a sense of humor
