Development Director
Lux Art Institute

Encinitas, CA

Lux Art Institute, a non-profit visual art organization in Encinitas, has an immediate opening for a Development Director to provide critical support in bringing the organization to the next level. This position reports to the Director and exhibits a true commitment to the mission of the organization. The Development Director is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating fundraising and development initiatives. With the Institute Director, the Development Director establishes Lux's fundraising priorities and objectives. The Development Director then creates fundraising strategies to meet specific program goals; identifies and profiles current and potential corporate, individual, and foundation prospects; develops and cultivates positive relations with donors and prospects; and with the Director, Deputy Director and Board members, solicits and stewards major donors.

This is a full-time position that requires a great and outgoing attitude and a strong work ethic. Flexible work schedule including some weekends and evenings will be required.

  • Create and implement a comprehensive strategic development plan
  • Allocate resources effectively and supervise development associates
  • Ensure timely preparation and follow-up for solicitation and grant writing
  • Coordinate production of all fundraising literature and website content
  • Oversee management of the eTapestry donor database; set policies and procedures for retention of data and reporting; maintain data security and quality controls
  • Assist in training board members in development best practices and engage them in various fundraising initiatives


Plan and execute strategic fundraising for Lux's annual operations and special projects (including capital needs) through

  • Annual Fund
  • Major Gifts and Donor Prospect research
  • Donor Stewardship
  • Corporate and Individual Sponsorships
  • Grant Requests and Awards
  • Planned Giving
  • Capital Campaign
  • Advancement Events
  • Corporate and Individual Sponsorships
  • Grant Requests and Awards


  • Supervise the successful strategic planning, development, and implementation of Lux's membership program
  • Ensure proper recognition of members at various levels
  • Plan, direct, and attend member events and donor receptions


Education & experience

  • A Bachelor's degree required (with graduate training preferred) in professionally appropriate field
  • CFRE certification a plus
  • 5 to 7 years professional experience within a nonprofit organization, ideally a cultural organization
  • Successful track record in securing sponsorships and gifts in the $25,000 - $75,000 range

Skills & knowledge requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of fundraising strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior interpersonal and leadership skills to collaborate effectively with Lux constituencies, volunteers, and staff
  • Proven organizational skills: ability to schedule and complete multiple short-term and long-term tasks
  • Ability to reassess priorities and flexibility to meet changing deadlines and To-Do lists
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter with independent work style
  • Proficient in software such as Microsoft Office Suite and eTapestry donor software
