Facilities Maintenance Lead

Full-Time/ Non-Exempt 

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum ( is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the historic Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife. 

Under limited supervision, the Maintenance Lead performs a variety of work in general maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment for the Japanese American National Museum site which includes a 1925 Historic Building, which has been designated as a historic site (33,000 sq. ft), a 1999 Museum Pavilion (138,000 sq. ft.), and a 2005 Forum/auditorium addition (10,000 sq. ft.). The position is full time and will require some early mornings or evening and occasional weekend hours based upon vendor and contractor scheduling.

At least 3 years of lead maintenance experience.  Familiarity with minor repair and maintenance in areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, concrete, walls and coverings, and phone system. Assist with maintaining building and exteriors to ensure safety in accordance with city, county, state and federal health & fire regulations. Assists Facilities/Security Manager with updating maintenance schedule and coordinates repairs for museum assets. Provides administrative support for unit and acts as back upon coordination of staffing coverage when manager is unavailable. Prior non-profit / museum experience and working with volunteers is desired.  Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Display care and pride in work to provide the best service to customers. Must be able to work with a team as well as individually with minimal supervision. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus. Familiarity with Gmail, MS Office and two-way radio use beneficial. Bilingual English/Spanish skills a plus. Background check required.
