U.S. arts funding, organizational structure, and grantmaking were just some of the topics covered on Friday, September 6, when twenty-one senior officials from the China Ministry of Culture in Beijing and more than ten provincial culture departments visited Sacramento. The delegates met with Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council, and Arts Council Member Christopher Coppola at The California Museum, hosted by the Museum‘s Executive Director Dori Moorehead.

The delegates are on a three-week visit to the United States to learn about American culture and arts management, led by Ms. Zhang Yafang, Director General of China’s Ministry of Culture Department of Personnel.

Mr. Watson led a conversation on the United States arts funding model and the California Arts Council followed by Ms. Moorehead, who presented an overview of the operations of The California Museum and the challenges faced by U.S. arts nonprofit organizations. Mr. Coppola shared news of his upcoming visit to China this winter to speak with Chinese film students in his new role as Director of the Film Department at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Special thanks to Amy Zhao, Program Manager of the U.S. China Exchange Council and John Seto, Special Projects Associate at the California Arts Council.
