California Arts Council and ViewBug Collaborate to Showcase Public Art in California

The state's arts agency and a California internet company team up on a photo contest of California public art

Sacramento -
The California Arts Council and ViewBug, an online photo-contest community website, are sponsoring a California "Art in Public Places" photo contest. Entrants may submit photos of public art in California to potentially win prizes and have their photos highlighted on a high-profile photography website. Details may be found at http://www.viewbug.com/contests/ca-arts-in-public-places-contest.

The photo contest with ViewBug - a California company based in San Diego -- is one way the state's arts agency is using technology to fulfill its mission to advance the arts and creativity. "The California Arts Council feels very strongly about showcasing California's brilliant legacy of art created specifically for public settings - in parks, plazas, buildings and community-gathering spots," said Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council.

The Arts Council's goal of the contest and partnership with ViewBug is to highlight the important public artwork in California using online media. "When the California Arts Council was created in 1975, one of the responsibilities outlined for the agency was to provide for the exhibition of art works created in public buildings and areas throughout California," said Watson. "One ongoing challenge for cities, counties and communities is how to maintain and conserve works of public art. The California Arts Council, in collaboration with ViewBug, wishes to lend its statewide 'voice' to the issue of public-art preservation, and the image-based website will help inform the public of what is at stake."

Winners of the photo contest may receive, among other prizes, a free webinar attendance from the California Lawyers for Arts, a nonprofit organization that provides legal services to artists and members of the creative community. The contest will run until December 2, 2012, and the winning photos will be chosen by photographer Jared Platt.
